FAQ
What features are included in a basic home security system?
A basic home security system usually consist of a main keypad and various contact sensors covering doors and windows. Additionally, we can install pet safe motion detectors, smoke/CO detectors, and leak detectors.
What advanced features are available for home security?
Newer security alarm systems now allow for some home automation, to allow the homeowner to arm and disarm the system from their phone. Also, most systems allow control of temperature, lighting, and music, from within one app on their phone,or from the alarm keypad.
What kinds of home security cameras are available?
Home security cameras, or surveillance cameras, come in different flavors. New camera installations are usually digital/IP cameras, using the same wires that we use for computers, that allow us to power and get the image from the camera on one wire. Additionally, we can get video images up to 4K resolution.
Will my pet trigger the motion detector?
Most motion detectors today are safe from pet movement. However, large breed animals can still trigger the motion detector.
How do home security systems protect against fire and floods?
Installing leak and smoke detectors are the best way to protect from fire and floods. Every home should, at a minimum, have a smoke detector on every floor, in every bedroom, and in the common area outside of the bedrooms. Leak detectors should be installed wherever possible. We typically install them at boilers, hot water tanks, and central AC units. Additionally, they can be installed anywhere there is a sink, toilet, etc.
What are the “smart home” or home automation features of security systems?
One of the coolest features of the smart home/home automation features of today’s security alarm systems is the ability to turn lights on and off when you arm or disarm the system. Additionally, the system can turn the lights on when there is a fire or security alarm event.
Should I choose a hardwired or wireless security system?
While hardwired systems will always have greater reliability, today’s wireless systems are good, and easier and quicker to install. Today’s wireless systems also are encrypted, to prevent wireless tampering.
Do wireless security systems work during home power failures?
Yes! A proper UL listed wireless security system will last a minimum of 24 hours on battery backup, and report alarms locally. With the addition of a cellular backup system, the alarms can also be sent to the central station to send the alarms to first responders.
Do I need to sign a long contract for home security monitoring?
Yes. A contract is required for central station monitoring of the security system.
What if I want to switch companies? Is security equipment transferable?
The equipment is transferable to another company, after the terms of the contract have been honored. But we hope you would choose to stay with us!
What if an intruder orders alarm shut-off?
Newer panels offer the ability to enter a “duress” code, which disarms the system, while additionally sending a silent alarm to the central station.
What happens if there’s a false alarm?
During a false alarm, the central station will call the first person in the contact list. If this person answers, they will be asked for a passcode to ensure proper cancellation of the alarm. If the first person does not answer, the second person in the list is called, while simultaneously the central station starts a call to the proper authorities. If the second person gives the proper passcode, then the alarm is canceled.
Check with your local county/town for false alarm reporting concerns.
How much do home security systems cost?
The cost of a system is something that requires a visit to the home and a conversation with the homeowners. Understanding their concerns, and walking the entire home/property is required to be able to design a proper system.
